After 2 failed orders (Mesh & Dino-PC mentioned earlier) I ordered the parts to build my own from Scan.co.uk as recommended on here.

All parts showed stock so why have I just had an email saying there's a delay due to lack of stock?? I give up, no wonder the country is going down the tubes when I keep failing to spend money despite my best efforts.

Being a Bolton lad I've visited chez Scan many time to order over the counter.

What happens is you queue up to order and pay, then u sit alongside paedos and porn freaks waiting for their 2gb gfx cards and eight TB's of storage and you wait and wait....

Staffed almost exclusively by Bobs you wait and wait. This applies also even if you've preordered...

Eventually you get your bits off a spotty Bob or you don't.

It's not far from the reebok, but let's not go there.....

About time I got a new PC for the home office - aiming to spend approx 500 - 600 quid.

So not a gaming PC (for the office remember), mainly used for admin (email / office etc), software dev and able to cope well with virtual machine images.

Was tempted by the Dell Optiplex ranges but also seen some good reviews of Palicomp and ChillBlast boxes - anybody here have experience of them?

Hello Friend... Dell is simply the best. Don't think for anyother as much you think you get much confused. So go for DELL.

After doing more homework and getting up to speed to on the current technology I went for this:

"Titan Triceratop" Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz @ 4.40GHz DDR3 Sandybridge System

plus upgraded RAM to 8GB, added a Crucial M4 SSD for the boot drive and splashed out on an Iiyama 24" monitor.

Loaded up the company credit card this morning - all in was £979 delivered, so a tad higher than I had intended but figured that the spec should keep the PC usable for a few years (my current main box is knocking on 11 years old from the same thinking at the time).

Good lord! Just as well their spare bits are not very specialised and integrated like some larger makers.

Although they seem to have some negative comments on net I have always found Mesh Computers good, support is ok too.

Steer well clear of Mesh, they went into Administration in June and are still under investigation fro trading while insolvent

The best thing I can say about Dell support is I've never had a reason to call them.

The only time I used them was when I was renting a spot for a contract and my landlord's PC needed fixing. Since I wanted the boiler fixing I kind of couldn't say no

It turned out that a Bob had been at the system, the speaker wiring too. The Dell support guy was so absolutely confident that a restore from the hidden partition plus rewiring the speakers myself would do the trick that I believed him. He was right.

Oh, the landlord suggested using the same Bob for my heating. Having seen how he'd mucked up the PC I decided to try again myself. No way was I letting him near my gas boiler.

For some reason, even after the PC cockup that landlord held Bob in high regard. Must have been a good salesman...

That sounds like one of those fancy funny shaped trendy PCs, not the boring grey squarish box design we all know and love.

I've had a few low-end dell desktops and though there isn't much space inside - they used a fancy folding chassis - you could fit a low-profile GPU and so on. Those were not very modern though so maybe it changed. Normally though laptop parts are more expensive so it seems a slightly odd decision.

Support is highest on my issues on buying machines. If you are on 400 quid a day and they take more than 1.5 days to turn around a 600 quid PC issue it is not cost effective and dell will fight tooth and nail on this trying to convince you the PC is OK when it will not boot up.

I've always found Dell support to be great. Bought 2 laptops back in 2007 and had a few things go, a screen, blu ray drive, motherboard and they were always there next day to replace the faulty part.

What laptop parts specifically? Obviously they're not using a laptop case, or any part thereof. Nor a laptop hard disk, a laptop graphics card, a laptop screen and keyboard, a laptop touchpad etc. etc.

I guess they could use the same motherboard as a laptop, with the same processor, but I thought the power-saving'ness of laptop processors made them more expensive. The budget solution would surely be to not use laptop parts.
