Well, there is no chance of my apps compiling when I cannot even spell it correctly !!!.Seeing as you've spelled it wrong three times (including the thread title), I presume it's not a typo.

Android - "An automaton that is created from biological materials and resembles a human." 
Personally, I'd recommend getting clued up on the HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript combination instead, so you can make stuff that works on lots of devices. That sort of thing is heavily in-demand at the moment. Everyone wants their sites and apps to look good on all the big-selling smartphones, and to use the new features.
Unless you have a specific app in mind and only want it to work on Android devices for some reason.

You best bet is probably a second hand HTC hero or similar from ebay or similar. I am currently looking at development for the Andriod O/S. I have the toolkit / emulator etc on the PC but am looking for a cheap Pay As You Go Andriod based phone. Obviously cheaper the better.
