    Well, there is no chance of my apps compiling when I cannot even spell it correctly !!!.

    Personally, I'd recommend getting clued up on the HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript combination instead, so you can make stuff that works on lots of devices. That sort of thing is heavily in-demand at the moment. Everyone wants their sites and apps to look good on all the big-selling smartphones, and to use the new features.

    Unless you have a specific app in mind and only want it to work on Android devices for some reason.
    and then use PhoneGap or appcelerator to make it a marketplace application.

    You best bet is probably a second hand HTC hero or similar from ebay or similar. That should take you from Eclair 2.1 to Froyo (2.2) to Gingerbread (2.3) if you use VillainRom.

    I am currently looking at development for the Andriod O/S. I have the toolkit / emulator etc on the PC but am looking for a cheap Pay As You Go Andriod based phone. Obviously cheaper the better. Has anybody got any recommendations. I've done the usual Google searches etc but they all seem to come up Contracts etc or not much detail.
