Firmware
-
My Netgear almost met the same abrupt end when it kept disconnecting. I went to the Netgear site and downloaded their beta firmware and it has been pretty much fine since then.
If you are saddled with one of these routers then I would give flashing the firmware a go. If you are considering buying one then don't.

Static
Yeah try assigning static IP's by mac address .....
But do dump the netgear, goto the netgear forums on their official site for a full list of horror stories regarding drop out's, disconnects, overheating. etc........
I actually punched my dg834gt a few nights back after it constantly disconnected me after 3 or 4 mintues of activity, it only took one hit to completly shatter the internals, tulipe quality!!!
Just bought a buffalo replacement and it's up all night long
so I agree with the Buffalo plug.

In a similar veing can anyone recommend a good wireless switch? Not bothered about it being a router/adsl whatchamacallit, I just want to plug my existing ADSL router into it so I can go wireless with the rest of the network.
Unless it's cheaper to go with the router option anyway.

I have a netgear ADSL router - DG834. Never had a problem with it. The router is plugged into a 16-port 10/100 switch and all other network devices are plugged into the switch. It only cost me about £15. Perhaps worth a try? Or you could have a look for an upgraded firmware and try flashing it? Backup first!
Upgrading to gigabit lan this week, my other half is treating me to the kit for me birthday! Yay!

Had the same myself - eventually pulled it and bought a Linksys - works a treat and hasn't dropped the line once.

I'm having a similar problem with my new Netgear WGR614. It seems to drop the connection whenever I launch Half-Life 2. Which is a royal pain in the arse.

Netgear modem router
My modem/router runs fine while I have one terminal connected, as soon as I try to use two it appears to drop the DSL line and try to renegotiate.
I can happily use my lap top on the wireless net or my desk top (or lap top or x-bax) on my ethernet net.
The router occasionaly stays up with more than one terminal.
Any advice.
Will allocating permanent IPs to each node (within the router range of course) make any difference? If I did that do I still need the router in DHCP mode.Tags: None
