An alternative way to resize C: on a windows box is to grab a copy of a Debian Linux installer (http://www.debian.org/releases/sarge/debian-installer/) and use its partition manager to resize your partitions. It's quite happy resizing the NTFS filesystem within the partition.
Obviously, stop at that point and don't go any further, unless you actually want to install Debian! Oh, and backups advisable as always if you're messing with your HD
cheers.

You might as well just buy a new hard disk. I recently bought a new 80GB drive for my laptop for around £65. Finally ran out of patience with the measly 40GB I had before, it meant I had to carry some stuff around on DVD!
Quick reinstall of XP and apps, restore data from backup and jobs a good 'un.

I think that for the time being I'll simply compress it.

If you want to do it without formatting and reinstalling, buy Partition Magic. It will do partitioning on the fly. It is one of the few apps I have actually bought legally and legitimately, and it is brilliant. From memory it is around £30, which has to be better than formatting and reinstalling all your apps and stuff. Otherwise, you can take a ghost image of C currently, install a new hard disk and re-image it. You won't be able to change the partition sizes on your existing disk without losing data (unless you buy Partition Magic, obviously). Don't forget with Ghost you will also need a boot disk with the drivers to connect to wherever you have the image file stored. For jobs like these, it's not as simple as it sounds. Do a google for "Barts network boot disk" or something similar if you need a good boot-disk site, although there are others.
There followed lots of
It was at this point I went out and bought Partition Magic.

If you external drive is big enough, back everything up onto it and flatten the box. Repartion and reformat as you wish and restore from the USB.
