It's a limitation of Office 2003 where it doesn't put the install files onto the hard drive. Office 2007 resolves that problem.

I can never work out if Microsoft are looking out for us and constantly making the software better or if they are just fixing crap code.
The service is certainly much better than it was but they have an update every week now.

Did you do selective Office install? Patch is instructed to patch some files that you may have excluded from installation....

WTF! Lastest M$ Updates...
What the tulipe is go on with M$??
Just got 16 updates that demanded that I insert stuff off the Office 2003 CD-ROM just so that they can patch them!
for the 1st 10 (before I go bored and cancelled them) I got the message
"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003' disk and click OK"
Needless to say I didn't and got:
Initializing installation... done!
Installing Update for Outlook 2003 (KB943649) (update 1 of 16)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Access Snapshot Viewer 2003 (KB955439) (update 2 of 16)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB921598) (update 3 of 16)... failed!
Installing Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) (update 4 of 16)...
Installing Security Update for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 (KB948988) (update 5 of 16)...

Installing Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB953404) (update 9 of 16)...
Installing Security Update for Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 (KB950213) (update 10 of 16)...
When I cancelled the update I got...
"The following updates were not installed:

Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB921598)
