Recently I signed up after doing a bit of research in VPN's to a company called NordVPN. It gets rave reviews in the press and they do have some decent offers on subscriptions. I signed up for a two year deal which worked out at about GBP 2.50p a month, a good deal. The software installed fine on Win 10 and I got a connection to a UK based VPN server no problem. My IP address looked as though I was connected to an ISP in Manchester despite me being in Asia. Great stuff, BBC iPlayer worked just fine. So, I tried logging into Netflix with my UK account. Logged in OK but big chunks of content were missing. So I signed out of the VPN and logged back in to Netflix, same result, I was logged in but tons of stuff just not there. It seems like Netflix are smart to the use of NordVPN and their IP addresses in the UK. I trawled the NordVPN website and found a footnote at the bottom of a Blog page that said they only support Netflix streaming fully in the USA and France. Looks like Netflix in the UK is a tougher nut to crack.

So, I mailed NordVPN to cancel the subscription. They have offered a full refund, I'll wait and see if I get my money back. The final thing to comment about is that NordVPN are based in Panama and while this may be very good for your privacy, I am not that happy to think I gave my credit card details to a Panamanian company I actually know little about other than the rave reviews they get on line in the ezines.

Why didn't you try the US servers of NordVPN? however I use ExpressVPN US servers for Netflix US in UAE, I am able to unblock all the US content which earlier was unavailable in my country. The US servers are good speed and seem to work for me so far. Getting a US IP is important when unblocking US library

I've heard good things about Freedome from F-Secure. They're based in Sweden. Not tried them yet, on my to do list to have a bash at the free trial.

It's not Netflix; it's about the way TV and film rights are sold by country. Netflix would like to buy something once and make it available everywhere, which is what they do for their own content. I guess the production companies have forced Netflix to start taking it more seriously.

Thanks, yes I know what Netflix say, but I pay for a UK account and I am a UK citizen. I can't really understand the real problem of a UK account holder watching
his paid for UK account streaming from a UK server to my laptop that just happens to be out of the UK. Oh well.

Regarding the Exodus stuff thanks, I was unaware of the controversy there.

And the police action? Well, it's still the same stuff. They still appear to be going after re-sellers of Android boxes loaded with plug ins. Anyone who wants to use Kodi to watch what may or may not be illegal content on their laptop or tablet isn't (yet) a target as far as I can see. Kodi is a legal media player app, how can they prosecute people for having it installed on their lappy?

My experience too. The films I watched (or rather intended to watch), some were very obviously recorded on a camcorder in the cinema! I'll let you guess what the quality of those was like!

I guess until there is a real high profile case of Kodi use rather than Kodi ownership, we'll never know how legal it is? I decided against a Kodi box, I just run it on my laptop.

Following up on this thread, I looked at PIA as recommended here. It looks pretty OK but the number and location of servers is not so good for me. East Asia is covered but the gulf region of the Middle East seems very poorly supported. I asked about PIA using Skype in UAE and nearby countries. This is what they said -

Thanks all. Sorry for the late reply. Anyhow, NordVPN were good on their promise and refunded my two year subscription, no questions asked.

PIA looks good but they don't seem interested in facilitating access to "geo locked content" like Netflix. Seems I'm out of luck with this and might have to fall back on Kodi, which I think will work with a VPN quite OK?
