I think old age is knackering my eyesight and ruling out tablets for all but basic consumption of streaming content and reading magazines. I have a 12.2" Samsung Note Pro tablet but prefer using a 15" Retina for most things.

Surface Pro 3 got good / best review in the current edition of MicroMart.

When I look at a surface I cannot see how to type on it when its perched on my lap...Originally posted by LondonManc View PostIt's replaced my laptop, so yes
Obviously everyone's usage requirements are different but it does what I wanted my laptop to do.
So I'm off to treat myself to a macbook instead...

Got a Surface 3 which I'm very happy with. Good for both scenarios - home and work.

I was a bit cynical about tablets, but I've had one a year now and it is pretty much all I use at home. As said I'll fire up the laptop or even the desktop if I want to write something beyond a few words or do some useful work. I've remote desktop'd from a tablet into a server before, but it's just too much of a PITA to do anything without a mouse and keyboard.
Best to have both.

I have a Lenovo Helix, so it's a hybrid. You can detach the tablet from the keyboard. Using the tablet on it's own is fine for reading, light surfing etc but if I want to write an email then I connect the keyboard. Not sure I could get by without a keyboard.Originally posted by expat View PostI am thinking of switching to a tablet, since I see little use for my own laptop nowadays. I do use a computer all day at work but it is always the client's computer.
I know it's up to me to spec my requirement and verify that the proposed hardware and software fits, but I wonder if anyone has any experience of this?
If I was after a hybrid now then I would probably go for the Surface Pro, thinking of buying the missus one actually.
I've got a portable DVD player for the rare times I need an actual DVD.

Indeed, but I find myself creating little or nothing on my own computer now.Originally posted by original PM View PostThe only thing I will say is that I find tablets great for consuming - e.g movies, data, presentations etc.

Therefore I reckon the best option is one of those laptops with a detachable screen so you get both - in 1 package!
My only reservation would be movies: currently I usually buy them on DVD and rip them (then give the DVD to a charity shop). Downloading seems impractical: I am very mobile so I do not have frequent returns to a broadband landline; in most countries you can only get a PAYG SIM if you don't have a local bank account, and downloading a movie on a PAYG SIM, even a local one, can get pretty expensive.
