Yes - by making patent deal with Novell that made it less likely to be sued for any Microsoft patent infringement Mono could possibly have.

.NET is losing rapidly against Java, unless they port it to Linux and support it well for server workloads it won't end well.

Microsoft want way too much money for basic server OS - it can be more expensive than hardware it could run on, so really it's a no go just on the basis of price.

Who else is selling Microsoft "cloud" other than Microsoft? That's because of crazy licensing - nevermind tulipy OS in the first place, but asking a lot of cash for it? There is absolutely no way the web could exist as we know it without some other free OS like Linux - otherwise websites would be forced to charge for visits because of crazy Microsoft licensing policies - **** off with those CALs.

Yet I would say Microsoft has way more enterprise installs which should be where the big money is.

Their phones are tosh, gaming they are losing, no real home systems (look at Google nest).

There is so much that could be done in the enterprise they just don't touch.

They are in a position to hit the home market with so many gadgets but they don't.
