And I wonder what happens to them when bits get packed up and sold to the private sector?
I'll bet the consultancies' world dropped out of their bottoms (slightly anyway) when they heard about Royal Mail

What is quite surprising is how small a slice of the pie they have. I'd be interested in seeing where the rest of the money goes.

The Cabinet Office's guidance to the rest of the Civil Service over avoiding large contracts to single suppliers is a relatively recent position, many of the existing contracts have multiple years still to run and are for some rather large values.
Several of the contracts I'm in contact with on my current gig run for what many people would see as an absurd amount of time and get-outs aren't even vaguely plausible without some massive consequences. The annual values aren't chicken feed either.

NAO: £4bn of gov work doled out to just 4 outsourcing giants
In spite of the Cabinet Office's tough talk about binning hefty suppliers whose performance is crappy, four outsourcing giants caught up in contractual issues have amassed £4bn of government business.
The fabulous four include Capita, Serco, G4S and Atos, which collectively banked £1.05bn in profits globally. The four firms made revenues of £4bn taken from the UK taxpayers' purse, but only two of them paid corporate tax, forking out just £81m to HMRC last calendar year, said the National Audit Office.Tags: None
