I would hardly have described Highland Park as peaty, it's one of my favourites but I thought it was the opposite of peaty? Same goes for Jura (the ones I tried anyway).

The Whisky society put this slightly contrived map together to group whisky type by location...



It does show HP12 as smoky but I remember it being more like Glenfiddich. Maybe I need to re-acquaint myself

I like most of them tbh. I acquired the taste while working in Livingston many moons ago. Not entirely sure what's from where, though I know some are from islands cos they are named after them, and I always enjoy trying different ones.

I got a bottle of something called blue hanger at the weekend as a birthday present for a mate. Not tried it myself but he really rates it.

In my opinion underrated but when it comes to whisky market share / promotion colours the market too much, there are some gems out there to be discovered.

Haven't tried it so can't really comment. Recently read Raw Spirit by the late Iain Banks which is very informative as well as just a good read.

Highland Park 12 year old was there, any good? Or is it better to shell out for the 18?

The 12 is fine but the 18 at the right price is worth spending a wee bit more. Try out a 12 first and see what you think it might just be to your taste.
