OH and I went to meet an agent yesterday for a chat - I expected nothing to come out of it and only went as I thought It would be good experience, and I was going into town any way.
Just had a call from them, they have a client who wants to interview me.

I had one email me about a role. I replied and said "I can't do it for that".

So he asked what can I do it for. I named a price I would be OK with.

I expect it will be a no, but you never know.

If I was rude, where would I be?

I am currently looking for my next contract and am getting lots of calls from agents.
I am always friendly, polite and chatty.
I know that very few - if any - of these conversations will come to anything.
Its just good manners as far as I'm concerned, and is all part of selling yourself.

    Whats in it for me!

    if nothing don't bother.

If you are after the princess you have to kiss a few frogs, and pretend you like it!

Smile and say, of course you can have referees - you get the previous agent.

If you want more get me a confirmed interview.

One thing that is not on your CV is how good you are at interviews, a contractor who says to the client "yes, I know VB3, can't you read" is not likely to get the work and the agent might be blamed for not filtering him out.

Someone who can't answer a polite, if stupid question is likely to be more trouble than he's worth, and a manager would have to need your skills *a lot* to want you for his team.

Some people don't like agents, somehow I manage to bear this cross without tears, but if you really can't cope with us then you need to either spend more time on business development or find another mode of work.
Totally this, particularly the last paragraph.

It was actually a genuine rant. After 50 calls in the space of a few weeks you can see why I went a bit bonkers

I agree it's an ecosystem, and the OP should learn to take this sort of stuff in his stride but I think for balance he was just having an off day and fancied a bit of pimp bashing with his forum buddies.

IMHO a RTFM response is quite acceptable if you only want to work with techies and in the capacity of a permie or a self-employed freelance dealing with IT companies directly _and_ you're very, very good.

Otherwise it's quite a pointless response.
