The point is that the appearance people aspire to, even those who do live healthily, is not generally possible through healthy living. Our media-led view of female 'perfection' typically involves under-eating and/or cosmetic surgery, and the "ideal" male physique requires that not only do you make your physique your main focus in life but that you have a certain anatomy to begin with... I could go to the gym every day for 2 hours and while I'd be in great shape, I would still look nothing like the guys you see portrayed as fairly normal in TV or magazines.

I said most people are unhappy with their appearance. I was including people who go to the gym and eat well in that - the majority of thin attractive women I know are just as unhappy with their appearance as everyone else.

So what's to be done about that? Force the Daily Wail to show pictures of ugly people on the beach? Force young men to buy a copy of 'Munters Weekly' for every copy of FHM or make women break off their Brad Pitt ogling sessions to wonder at the physique of John Prescott? Make gym equipment advertisers employ MF as a fitness model? Very few people want to ook at ugly bodies, even if they find their own bodies ugly; they want something to dream about. That's always been the case and always will be, even though norms of beauty change. Personally I can't stand the sight of emaciated female models and I don't understand what anyone sees in them, but obviously someone finds them attractive.

No, I certainly don't consider unfit people in a lesser light at all. However, if people don't take care of their appearance they shouldn't complain about their appearance and certainly shouldn't complain about images of people who do. Fine if they don't; maybe they find other things more important and that's OK, in fact it's probably very sensible. But if you want to have a particular appearance e.g. fat or fit, you'll have to live a certain way to get that and not complain about "ooh all these images are making me unsure of myself".
