The scales I have contain a setting for doing extra exercise. BUt it only applys aged 18-49. So I only have 32 days left of using that setting. Also I am now 84kgs - but was 95kgs 3 months ago.

Running a marathon takes a hell of a lot of energy but that needs to be stored somewhere and that is normally taken from food then burns fat, finally using muscle tissue.
But process also tunes your body metabolism to use LESS energy to do the same work. Thus when I started exercising I was about 17 stone but would drop 2lbs of weight on a training day with only a 1 or 2 km run and weight training I was on a controlled diet as well as a training regime so I knew what was going in my body. By the end of 3 months I was just under 15 stone, running 9k on the same diet and NOT losing the weight. So my body had figured out that it could run 9k spend an hour weight training then do its normal day of work and lose less than a few lbs a week. Meanwhile a guy that had just started to train with me was 13 stone losing several lbs a week...
So running is no use for weight loss. Which was my original point.

Indeed; there's plenty to eat in Kenya and Ethiopia (except when a dictator decided to starve the population), where most of the runners come from, but it's generally low in fat and high in carbohydrates and proteins; those runners eat a lot of grain and sometimes chicken. Unfortunately though obesity is now growing in many African cities as couples work two jobs to finance the household and send the kids to school, and fall into the trap of buying fast food on the way home to eat in the limited time they have in the evenings.

Not true otherwise the scrawny little africans that run marathons could not hold enough energy to finish the race. Running is a real pain in the arse if you want to lose weight because it will streamline your metabolism making it much harder to burn the fat. I can testify to this as the last time I bothered to exercise properly I got to a point where I could run 9k every morning and still had my wieght stuck rigidly at 15 stone. All it meant was that when I had to give up the exercise for a new job I piled on 3 stone in a few months...Originally posted by d000hg View PostIndeed.
