The best bit is the planning laws (or lack of) outside of city limits. They fancied a newer house overlooking the lake, so picked the site, drove a bulldozer down the road, turned right into the tree-line and kept going 'till they got to the lake.
"That's the drive sorted."
Three months later they're sitting on the porch overlooking the lake with G&T's in hand.
Can't do that here .....

Someone I sub-contract work to has just bought a house (log cabin) in New York State, complete with 15 acres of land. For this, he is paying a shade under $90k - damn on £60k.
