There are lots of stories about sledging in rugger...Zinzan Brooke holding up 4 fingers (to indicate how many games played and how many wins the AB's had in the series) to the bok forward packing and then saying "sorry, forgot you guys cant count"
Or my cricket captain in NZ to one of our bowlers "you do that again and Ill drop you"...so the bowler did it again and our captain dropped him...literally, on the spot dropped him

It does happen in football too. I didn't receive much of it myself when I was playing proper football, but when I did I didn't to take it to heart.
Not that often in my experience, and for a reason - you do that stuff against someone in a contact sport like football and if you don't actually get smacked you'd be quite likely to be on the recieving end of a mistimed tackle, slightly high. I can't remember ever being sledged in a game, arguements yeah loads, but not slagging someone off.
Maybe in cricket it goes on all the time, but not in football - someone tries that crap on me when I'm playing and they're likley to be on the recieving end of a smack as well (Not that I actually would, but if you got nasty enough I'd be very tempted). And none of those things are aceptable IMO.

Sledging goes on all the time. It makes a boring afternoon on the cricket field a little more bearable. And if I'm batting and I get abuse, I take it as a compliment that I'm doing something right.
Although Id be careful what racist taunt Id use to a guy who is covered in body armour AND has a great big bat!
Don't hold your breath for anything sensible. FIFA haven't done anything about diving after 32 years of it in the world cup.
Sepp Blatter says he won't do anything that cannot be applied to all levels of football. As that includes the Watford Sunday League, and as I suspect there aren't lip-readers at every game in Watford on the Sabbath, he cannot therefore advocate their use in Zidane's case.
Anyway, if you are going to punish racial slurs, why not slurs against one's mother or wife? Or one's religion? Or one's ginger hair, skinny legs, ugly face, short neck, fat gut, little willy, big bollox, knobbly knees, porno moustache, dodgy tattoo, sticky-out ears or cross-eyes?

FIFA? Act?

ZZ was an idiot for reacting to whatever was said, but that wouldn't excuse someone for making racist comments against him either, if that's the case. Not something you can justify under any circumstances.

Keith Hackett, head of referees in England, said that if it can be proved that Matterazzi racially abused the Frenchman, then Fifa should take retrospective action for "the good of the game".
