It was a risky thing to say because the media will simply focus on the "love the hoodie" and "wash and go politics" tagline that was put forward by the liebour spinmeisters, also aggravating the right wing members of the party.

If you look at both speeches he was outlining the following:

    1. Police should be crimefighters — “not form writers”.

    2. The public doesn’t want the police to give them learned lectures in sociology or criminology aimed at explaining why high levels of crime are inevitable or intractable or otherwise impossible to deal with.

    3. Adult society’s response to the hoodie shows how far we are from finding the long-term answers to put things right.

    4. Looking at the roots of petty crime: family breakdown, drugs, care homes and suggesting that the government is not good at dealing with these issues.

I'm so dissapointed. Had great hopes of the boy David but he seems to have surrounded himself with advisors of the loopiest sort. He'll be bringing out a rap record next.

Announcements like this tell me that he's taking the core Tory vote very much for granted - and this will be his downfall.

I don't think this 'hug a hoodie' initiative is going to play very well in Surbiton or Tunbridge Wells.
