It was a risky thing to say because the media will simply focus on the "love the hoodie" and "wash and go politics" tagline that was put forward by the liebour spinmeisters, also aggravating the right wing members of the party.
If you look at both speeches he was outlining the following:
1. Police should be crimefighters — “not form writers”.
2. The public doesn’t want the police to give them learned lectures in sociology or criminology aimed at explaining why high levels of crime are inevitable or intractable or otherwise impossible to deal with.
3. Adult society’s response to the hoodie shows how far we are from finding the long-term answers to put things right.
4. Looking at the roots of petty crime: family breakdown, drugs, care homes and suggesting that the government is not good at dealing with these issues.If you think my attitude stinks, you should smell my fingers.Comment
