Watchout for scams, word is that the main revenue comes from fresh people paying for the training and then coughing for a franchise and finding far from the expected numbers wanting to learn, people cutting each others throats with free lessons and discounts etc
Neighbour at old house had good rep and loads of experience but has sacked it to drive a bus, says the steady revenue lets him at least sleep...
No moat, no scaleability, no repeat business beyond the test.
For that and many reasons I am out.

Back onto the original subject...
I used to work for The AA Driving School. As has previously been said, the money is not great. You can probably crack 40k a year if you work 7 days a week, but its mostly unsociable hours. If you're well educated, I wouldn't recommend it - much easier ways to make a living out there.
Interesting story* - whilst I was at The AA, they had to fire an instructor after he was caught picking up a prostitute in his AA car

Let me guess, the training was offered by - the pirates?Originally posted by MyUserName View PostMy brother did some training to become diplomatic security on ships around Somalia etc to protect against piracy. The money was very good and you could pick and chose which contracts you took and when.
He paid for the training, passed it (did a couple of decades in the army so it was pretty easy for him) but does not seem to have heard anything since :-(
I am hoping that this was not a scam or anything.

Mate of mine did this did 20 -60 hours a week (depends on demand and price) paid ~£200-300 /week for car & Franchise lives in council accomodation. some weeks he is doing well but the hours are unsociable and he always looks stressed after some lessons. some cash in hand but you won't get rich.
frankly you are better off being an accountant for one man bands.

Minimal educational requirement before Pizza Hut will let you loose with one of their calculators.Originally posted by BrilloPad View PostLike that maths student who got a Desmond(2-2) from Oxford in maths then ended up as a waiter in pizza hut?

If he got a 2-2 at oxford he would have got the same from any decent redbrick uni.Originally posted by BrilloPad View PostLike that maths student who got a Desmond(2-2) from Oxford in maths then ended up as a waiter in pizza hut?
He would have been better off at Durham and getting a 1st or 2-1.
The general problem is we don't have another tradesmen and we have too many graduates with crap degrees (both in level and subject matter). Give children that information and let them decide what they want to do.

I'll be telling my son to get a degree from Oxbridge, you can do what you like then, if you then want to go and do something else you can and you will always have somthing to go back to or just do in your spare time
He would have been better off at Durham and getting a 1st or 2-1.

Then he became an accountant.

Last seen in the local rag mourning the passing of said house assessor thingies when the tories cancelled the idea.
I built a CRM for a company offering the home information pack service training course. The guy who set up and ran the company was on the Liebour panel which recommended and passed off this unnecessary red tape.
Anyway since I built the CRM I had access to all records and it was painful to see what was happening. People chucked away good jobs and signed up for this training paying around 10K and were all promised jobs paying 50K annually. Conservatives cancelled it and they were all jobless and the training company shut down.

The (ex) Gurkha's have been piling into lorry driving around here in Kent - the Government offer free training as part of their leaving package.Originally posted by MyUserName View PostMy brother in law was talking about lorry driving, he claims that you can earn good money driving back and forth and can step in and out of the jobs at will, once you are qualified.
Anyone know whether that is the case?
Meanwhile UK born chaps will have to get and pay for a 7.5 tonne then a class II training & licence think it costs around £1500

Just like any other job it can get rough in a recession, but yes.Originally posted by MyUserName View PostMy brother in law was talking about lorry driving, he claims that you can earn good money driving back and forth and can step in and out of the jobs at will, once you are qualified.

You do need to be 100% reliable or the jobs soon dry up.
