    Electric Car Pollution

Myths and Facts About Electric Cars: #evworld

    this is slightly more critical.

Are electric cars bad for the environment? | Leo Hickman | Environment | guardian.co.uk

This was a quite good quote
@ikd: The absence of urban air emissions is certainly a strong argument in favour of electric cars. For human toxicity, our study partly addresses the difference between emissions to densely populated and less populated areas, though this could certainly be improved. However, we cannot think only of the toxicity on humans; we also address toxic impacts on aquatic life and ecosystems.

@Seb: This is one of our core finding: because the production of an electric car causes roughly twice the climate impact of producing a comparable conventional car, it must run on rather clean electricity to "make up" for the initial climate impact.
    ......
@Guess11: Following industry standard, we based our assessment of the use-phase on the "New European Driving Cycle", which includes a typical share of stop-start.

As many readers point out, the electric car industry is young and will likely improve in the future. We studied the present generation of electric car, we refrained from making predictions.

This bloke did it to an S2000:

    Honda S2000 Electric Vehicle Conversion

The biggest problem of course is the huge weight of all those batteries, which goes some way to defeating the object of the exercise.

(And as an aside, don't you just love websites that are layed out with a narrow strip of text down the middle of your widescreen monitor).

So have you got any ideas about the figures/calculations I suggest, to back up [y]our points? It seems to me likely that even a coal power station is less dirty per joule than a petrol engine due to effects of scale and distribution, but it's only a guess.

And that this is an early stage both electric cars and the charging infrastructure are in their infancy.

Most people who make that point as an attack on electric cars don't realise it's not that simple. The pollution/Joule for a petrol automobile engine and a coal-burning power station will be different, plus you have to factor in efficiency on both sides... losses getting the energy into the battery, relative efficiency of a power station and an engine, etc.

I've not seen either side pushing figures on this... it would be more complex since it would depend on each country's powergrid (% coal, gas, nuclear, wind) but it should be fairly easy to do an approximation.
