I once sidled up to a reasonably well known tv presenter and tried to chat her up. I genuinely had no idea who she was or that she had been on TV, I just thought she was foxy. To her credit she never said anything to suggest I ought to recognise her and it was only when I returned to my friends and they pointed out who I'd been talking to that I found out.

I always liked the one where the American Airline Stewardess on desk duty in front of an impatient queue was given the DYKWIA treatment. She announced loudly over the Airport tannoy "We have a guy at my check-in desk who doesn't know who he is!! Can Anyone help him?"

Many years ago BBG did a Christmas stint in the GAME shop.
A customer signed his credit card slip but the signatures did not match so he asked the customer to sign again, at this the customer promptly whipped of his baseball cap & demanded DYKWIA?
BBG did recognise him (Ross Kemp) but said very politely “no….am I meant to?” at which point Ross Kemp muttered under his breath signed the slip & stormed off
IMHO the best way to act in those situations
