We've had a Zafira as the 'family' car for quite a while, he's right in that its not a drivers car but is incredibly practical and roomy. Ours has put up with tons of stick off the kids, bikes getting chucked in it, transporting rubble etc etc and cant think of anything thats actually gone wrong with it.

We got the 1.8 which is fine for school runs but underpowered when loaded down with tons of camping kit so i'd go for one of the bigger engine options (but then you lose economy which TBH isn't great on the 1.8 to begin with).

I'd recommend one, its a big, solid, dependable, pretty much unexciting workhorse of a motor so fits the family car bill nicely. Wouldn't get anything fancy as the kids would just destroy it in minutes.

This - the missus has had the 2.0 diesel elegance version since new (04 plate). Got 93k on the clock and it's been (still is) a great workhorse.

New gen Ceed is an excellent car for the money. Good spec and build. 7 year warranty is virtually the best in the industry. Not so good if you're a badge snob.

Passat, good quality German build. Class looking car in current guise. Bit of a boat in size. VW do have some issues with ABS pumps, ECU and dual mass flywheel if a diesel.
