One thing worth noting is that train tickets are cheaper if you buy them from the olympic rail site
2012 Games train fares - National Rail Games Travel - and allows you to use railcards before 10am etc. Booked tickets for 2 days for 3 adults and 1 child from Farnborough to Waterloo - less than £50 for the lot (with network card)

We live about 40 miles away. The Olympics travel website suggested we needed to leave at 11pm the night before to get to our 10am event on time. Presumably this is to avoid the unenvironmentally friendly 4 mile drive to a station that takes us straight into London.

Sounds about right - 10 hours walking @ 4 miles an hour gets you there.
That leaves 1 hour waiting in the security queue to be frisked by school drop-outs and 1 hour having your water bottles or chips confiscated by the Army just ensuring that you miss your event!

Travelling back to Brum for long weekend, and Olympic event. I wouldn't have thought excel area would be any busier than for a normal event. Especially on a Saturday lunch time.

Normal events don't have:
1. Road closures due to random other sporting events taking place at the same time in other venues that are not normally used as them plus on the roads themselves, and
2. Diversions meaning you can't turn left or right when you need to due to random road closures, and
3. Special VIP lanes and if you stray in them you get a nice large fine, and
4. The timing of the traffic lights changed so you get stuck in a traffic jam.

This is through out London not just in the East End. (Through residents and businesses in the 3 East London boroughs with the most venues are the most angry.)

Use parkAtMyHouse as suggested but find a place at a tube station/train station as far out of London as you can get and then take the tube/train in using your travel cards. There are some train stations which are on fast routes.

The train from Milton Keynes to Euston takes 45 minutes and there is a huge carpark at the station

true but then you have to pay for x lots of expensive train tickets. All olympic tickets give you a free all zone tube ticket.

From Brum drive to Hillingdon and catch the Metropolitan line from there.

did you keep the free underground tickets that came with your olympic weightlifting tickets?

My car will be in its normal parking spot at Greenwich Millenium Village for the duration of the games. Perhaps I should take my car back up north and rent the space out!

Hello, I have tickets to an Olympic event at the Excel Centre, Docklands. Much to my annoyance I have found that the massive car park at the Excel will be closed on the day to make the Olympics “Environmentally Sustainable”, which is a bit of a joke as I will be travelling from where I currently live, which is Switzerland, so I am not exactly likely to do most of the journey by bike!

Thought one of you Canary Wharf/Docklands contractors might be able to suggest suitable parking in the area, preferably a known reputable company, not an “Under the Arches, Geezer run type carpark”

Wouldn't it be better to fly into Dockland airport?

Thing is there are going to be alot of people trying to drive. Due to the zil lanes its going to be chaos anyway.

I intend to cycle to work for the duration - and apart from that I only intend to go places further out of London from where I am.

Travelling from Birmingham, taking a few people so cheaper/more convienient to drive, it will be a Saturday, so I would have thought there would be a lot of carparks typically used by office workers available.

Though speaking to a woman from Excel with a very "no can do attitude" all car car parks in the area will be closed (I find this hard to believe)
