Ah, I think I have the perfect solution for you K2P2 and one that doesn't involve planning permission.

It is a solution that Malc and I have employed to get a bit more headroom in our maisonette and it is based on those pop-up roofs one sees on camper vans.

Like you, we have an attic with limited headspace but since the addition of our new roof we can now gain extra headroom by a simple flick of a switch to open up the roof
in a concertina like fashion. Indeed, the similarities with a concertina do not end there as the opening and closing actions are accompanied by a range of
musical effects.

In fact, Malc jokes that it's a shame that we're the only ones in our cul de sac with this arrangement otherwise he'd be able to stand in the street with his baton in hand
and conduct a roof concertina orchestra.

Most of it is husband's crap. I tried to throw out his windows 95 and NT3.5 training manuals at the weekend, but he was having none of it.

Not sure if it's high enough to make dormer windows practical - I think even at it's highest point it is too low.

Get him a shed, I have 2 sheds one for garden, one for crud/workshop. You can get a nice big one <£300. When you come to move there won't be a decent shed in the new place.

I have been married for a long time, and stopped trying to argue with my wife long ago. We move when she tells me 'not to park on the drive as the trucks are coming to move our gear tomorrow'.

k2p2 - The thing is, looking at your surrounding houses, there's no way they'd let you raise the apex, not a chance. It's genuinely a no go. If in doubt, call the local borough council and ask to speak to the duty planner. They'll answer all your questions far better than any of us.

Yep - was window shopping on rightmove last night. Don't like our house much, so spending a lot on it would be stupid anyway. Just need to get hubby to buy in to the idea.

Interesting, did that include the conversion? And stairs etc? 45K still sounds cheaper than moving, and, even without the crap we could do with more space. Would it have made your house different to those around?
