Ctrl + C,V can be used one handed whilst still using the mouse in right hand.

The CTRL & SHIFT keys are on the RHS of the keyboard too, and one-handable.

When you look at someone like AtW who uses the other approach & copies & posts everything on CUK you're able to calculate that he's wasted an extra 3 years of his life so far using that method.

On the other hand AtW would never be able to learn the 'new way' of CTRL+C/V/X.

I use the mouse with my left hand. And no I'm not left handed.

I also Ctrl+Ins/Shift+Ins/Shift+Del. But oddly if I use cut and paste of files in explorer, I'll always use Ctrl+C/X/V.

Not sure which part of the country you're from Simon, but where I come from the average number of hands is just under 2

In Devon, the average number of fingers and thumbs is just above 10.

It seems to me that BOTH methods need to be kept around for good so everyone is happy.

I never suggested that either method should be discarded. I was simply pointing out a possible reason why ctrl+C,V is more popular than the alternative method

CTRL-INS, SHIFT-INS, SHIFT-DEL can be used one-handed whilst still using the mouse in the LEFT hand.

Being left-handed Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-X is so painful to use I only ever do it when really necessary ... like when applications are badly written and do not support CTRL-INS, SHIFT-INS, SHIFT-DEL very well.
