Bill Bryson wrote a book on his experience of walking it (well, most of it). I know Bryson isn't to everyone's taste, but I thought it was a bloody good read and well worth getting it if you're thinking of trying it yourself....

That's my favourite of his books. It's not the funniest but I found it to be the best read.
I've already got the (paid-for) audio CD's of "A short history of nearly everything" and the book. Excellent stuff. I like to go to sleep listening to stuff like that. 'A Walk in the Woods' would be nice to have on the iPod though...
I'm all for a bit of cycling, but Lands End to John O'Groats sounds deadly boring. More interesting would be a nice hike in wilderness with fantastic scenery and the odd bit of running away from hungry bears (which is still probably less risky than cycling on British roads). Anyone done or planning to do the Appalachian trail?
