I've been in the UK 7 years now (probably still count then as a migrant with UK passport) but my rate is in the £400 a day region. Maybe the market is more realistic now only willing to pay more for specialist DBA skills, which is good. It means that the quality of DBAs needs to be higher and the client get a better deal.

I've only recently started looking for my first contract after my permanent employment ended a week ago and I find the market not bad at all, but then again I have nothing to compare it against.

If anybody else is looking right now, how are you finding the market?
Could it be that a combination of Oracle's automation of the routine tasks that are the bread-and-butter of some people who carry the title DBA, plus the large number of people volunteering to perform these tasks from India, has not only reduced the market for local DBAs, but reduced it especially to the more critical posts which might be less likely to offered on a contract basis?

Not at all true, I don't think (dunno about the yacht, but buying Siebel can't have been that expensive). Not in large accounts, SQL Server won't cut it. Oracle on unix is still it; or even DB2 on mainframe if you need real scalability and speed. Look at what banks use, they have scale and criticality. I know of none that use SQL Server.

I'd not noticed that it had slowed particularly - I guess it depends what your CV looks like (this is conjecture, though)... I've not had any trouble, and I'm sh1t

Generally it's a tulipe market out there right now. Everyone knows the world as we know it is coming to an end, so no doubt organisations everywhere are battoning down the hatches, as well as looking to the new world for their next stream of profits.

    Generally I'd agree.

In my type of work I've seen several people come onto the market from private companies cutting costs or going bust, but they tend to get sponged up by government-funded work.

    In general.
