    I used to like Yahoo and Altavista. I used to find navigating the categories gave better results than searching once you learned your way around them.

    As reported just the other day here.

    If memory serves correctly, Digital flogged AltaVista at one point but for shares rather than cash. The shares turned out to be worthless.

    A History of AltaVista in which we learn that some lucky chap registered the altavista.com domain name in 1994 and managed to sell it in 1998 for $3.3 million.

    As of 1998, it used 20 multi-processor machines using DEC's 64-bit Alpha processor. Together, the back-end machines had 130 GB of RAM and 500 GB of hard disk space, and received 13 million queries per day.

    Nice to know that Bing isn't getting any "traction in the marketplace"

    (BTW, why would one even want traction in a marketplace? It sounds like the worst thing to have in a space full of shoppers and greengrocers' stalls.)
