Use sign language. I believe the agreed universal signs for 'Can you go and get some change I'll wait indoors' areOriginally posted by chef View Postmy German is nowhere near that good
Little wink
Tongue in the side of your mouth with a repeated movement with your clenched hand moving in unison with your tongue
Side nod of the head towards the house
Little hop & skip to the house, little look over shoulder, teapot motion with hand and quick pucker of lips.

I find that ridiculous that he can't change 50 EUR note. I certainly wouldn't have let him have 50 EUR, and I would have told him off for not filling up his wallet. I mean if he didn't have 2 Euros that would have been OK I would have offered him 10, which actually I now wonder whether this was his intention. But if he couldn't change notes that would be totally out of order. Sort of thing you might expect from a bus driver but not a taxi driver.Last edited by BlasterBates; 9 September 2010, 10:37.

A golden rule dating back to the days when I used to use a dodgy private hire company:
Always have the exact change for your ride home from the pub, or you'll get short changed. A typical trick was to inflate the price if they sensed you'd had a few too many, so you could simply bash them the normal fare and say toodle-pip.
This was in the UK, mind, but old habits die hard.Last edited by Sysman; 9 September 2010, 10:35.

There is probably some law that says you aren't allowed to get into a taxi without having a note of roughly the right size to pay. You are lucky that you didn't get a rubber gloving from the boys in green.

I would have walked in to the house and said, 'Sorry mate you'll have to go and get some change'. Let him drive round looking for a garage without you.Originally posted by chef View PostGot in a taxi last night to take me the 2 mile journey home, fare was 8EUR something, opened my wallet and all I had was 50 and 100 notes. what are you supposed to do in that situation?
I had the money to pay, he simply didn't have enough for the change, i'm not going to give him 50EUR for a 8EUR taxi but then he wasn't going to allow me to get a free ride. Shops were closed, no petrol station nearby.
Ended up getting some change from in the house to pay, but that's unusual as I rarely have much change lying around, what if I hadn't have had it?
