I'm a sucker for historical fiction so for ripping reads:
Azincourt by Bernard Cornwall
London by Edward Rutherfurd (his New York wasn't as good but I'll buy his Rome if he writes it..)
Blood Red, Sister Rose by Thomas Keneally (a really unusual, haunting book, set out more like a script than a narrative but succeeds in taking the author out of the story.)
Any Flashman books and the 1st, and possibly best book in it's genre: The Iliad. You be in the blood and the sweat and the gore when the battle comes...

"World War Z" its a sort of "Bridget Jones diary style" of a guy going around the world interviewing people and its slowly revealed that there has been a zombie and human war which has been devastating. Incredible stuff actually written by the son of Mel Brooks but don't let that put you off. The film rights have been picked up by Brad Pitt's production company.
Incredible stuff and I could not put it down.
