If I swear to only have the one at 8pm then I always fail as there is just too long a gap between "the one" beer and bedtime and, having consumed the one weakens my will and more are bound to follow. I have a couple of these in the cupboard and should really drink them both:

Oh so many variables! One what; pint, quart, gallon? What sort of beer; bitter, lager, stout? And then there's the location and the company, and what do you plan doing later this evening or, indeed, tomorrow morning?

But aside from this, I'd say "yes" have a beer and hang the consequences.
