A teacher mate of mine still screws up his face at the sound of the word "Thatcher", and utters "cruel, cruel woman" under his breath.

Those who were aware of how business works liked her, and those who weren't, didn't.

Au contraire. Sweet of you to care though.
You still haven't given us any examples of industries unnecessarily destroyed by Thatcher's government. Water doesn't count, I've decided, as I just turned on my tap and some water came out, so I've taken that to mean the water industry is alive and pumping.
You stick to your bitter little anti-Thatcher rant, as you are fully entitled, this being a free country (despite the best efforts of socialists down the years). When she does go, I might just have a glass of the bubbly stuff myself. I'll be toasting the woman who transformed Britain from a 3rd world basket case to the 4th largest economy. You can do what you like. I'm off to read Animal Farm again...

Point taken vista - to sum up, you say "every man for himself".

I have some sympathy with that now, ever since the current Chancellor started finding stealthy ways to grab more and more money from me, and the IR started bullying people into paying tax they shouldn't be paying.

But it is wrong to suggest that "all politicians are the same".

I have paid more tax under Labour governments - the second half of the seventies when I started work, and the last five years - than I have under the other party.

Yet through that time, the things that tax revenue is now spent on have not changed greatly. Hospitals still have similar waiting lists, trains are still late, crime is still increasing, schools are different but no better.

So from that point of view, it seems to me that all politicians do a similar job - it is just that Labour politicians do it more expensively and with more complex systems than the others.

Therefore, if I consider economic grounds alone, I'd rather not hire Labour politicians to run the country for me.

calls itself a "satirical site". Someone needs to check the definition of satire, this is just a highly obusive and offensive rant site. And I quote:
"I have a bottle of fine Champagne sitting at home. It is reserved for the day when this bitch dies. I look forward to drinking it (and hopefully very soon)."
(No prizes for guessing who the "bitch" is).

Sensible and accurate post by Fleetwood in my opinion.

I was no fan of Thatcher as I believe in social freedom as well as economic freedom and she was no libertarian. Also, she took far too much power back to central government. In a democracy you should not just strip powers from an elected body like the GLC just because you don't like it. He may have been a lefty but Livingstone had a few sound ideas back then.

That said, what she did to end abuse of union power, particularly secondary action, was totally necessary. Similarly with the Falklands; the justification in real legal terms was total and although the cost was out of proportion to the importance of that dependency*, sometimes you have to make a stand to avoid future problems. Somebody steals your wallet with £5 in it? Big deal! If you can, you still break their nose to prevent it happening again.

*Unimportant that is, assuming that later governments never have the guts to exploit the natural resources around it. Thatcher would have.

No. Germany was in a dreadful state in the 20's due to massive reparation payments imposed by the victors at the end of WW1. Right from the start Hitler used violence to achieve political aims including the murder of political opponents and the beating up of Jews and others. Nazism was never particularly successful economically, but what it did do was restore Germans respect for themselves by reneging on the reparation payments, by rea-arming contrary to the Versailles treaty, and by recovering territories ceded at the end of WW1 to neighbouring countries. And of course they used rhetoric and pageantry to inspire people. Envy hatred and bigotry was central to Nazism from the very beginning and was a core element of its so-called philosophy. One good element that was successful was the idea of working hard though Hitler himself was somewhat lazy and disorganised contrary to the stereotypical idea of Germans!

As an aside a significant reason for the success of the German army was the ability of commanders in the field to take decisions independent of the central command. In other words it was not centrally controlled, but more democratic. Interestingly the Israeli army (and I believe the pre-independence terror groups such as Higana) were modelled on the Nazi model. That is one significant reason they were able to defeat the inefficient badly managed Arab armies in 1948, 1967 and so on. This is a nice illustration of why independence will triumph over central control e.g. socialism.

If you are to comment on history, then it helps to know at least a little but of what you are talking about rather than the cliches presumably learnt from Hollywood films.

I know plenty of people who live off the state, when they could get a job, but they do not want to because they are lazy scroungers. All of these people are healthy educated intelligent people who could easily get a job. One took a 'sabbatical' by going on the dole. Another of these people is my half brother who sponges off the Finnish state thanks (?) to the EU.

What we need is a system that forces people to work if they are physically and mentally capable of doing so. If like my half brother they repeatedly get sacked on purpose, then they should have their benefits withdrawn. These people take the piss and I don't see why I should pay someone else to have a lifetime holiday.

Until then lefties were praising the Soviet Union for its compassionate system. When it collapsed, they saw the truth, and that the false image was all smoke and mirrors.

Anyway I cannot see why I should pay someone to do a job if someone else can do a better job much more cheaply. It does not make sense. Instead these people should find jobs elsewhere. If we end up propping up fake jobs, the whole country will collapse which is exactly what happened in the 70's and Mrs T. was needed. To see other examples of the creation of false jobs destroying an economy you just have to look at Japan (which is at last starting to shed fake jobs and recovering) and France (which is still in a mess). Japan is especially interesting. It did exactly what you suggest i.e. very slow reform. And we can see the consequences namely an economy in the doldrums for more than a decade and the associated suffering.

Rather than criticise Mrs T. and praise Blair and New Lier, you should instead be praising Mrs T. and criticising those who allowed the country to go to the dogs in the 70's. It is the latter that bear responsibility for the inevitable job losses.

You need to learn that politicians should not run industries. They are usually interested in short term gains, and most simply do not have a clue about running an efficient industry. Think government IT contracts. If you want bureaucratic inefficiency, with overmanning, then let politicians run companies.

It's clear that you do not have a clue about economics.
