Microsoft has reported a 60% jump in profit, thanks largely to "exceptional demand" for Windows 7.

Net profit came in at $6.66bn (£4.13bn) for the three months to 31 December 2009, up from the $4.18bn it made in the same period a year earlier.

It also reported record revenues of $19.2bn, which comfortably beat analysts' forecasts.

Yourco is buying it for research into a potential product expansion.

The only answer I can give is that it's been a while since I bought a gadget, and now that I have the prospect of some work, I want to buy something to celebrate.
It costs about the same as a decent Push-Chair...

    Oh right, I see !

It doesn't replace anything, it just creates a need where there wasn't one in the first place.

You've got to give it to Apple, their marketing department must have access to some seriously mind-bending drugs.

But hey, so long as it's shiny, has the Apple logo on it, people will think I'm cool if I buy one.

Which kind of reinforces my view, that Apple don't sell products, they sell "Lifestyle and Cool Immortality".

Obviously works for them, I guess. And people like it as well.

    So everyone's happy :-)

I'm amazed they're still managing to flog whichever iteration of Office they're onto these days. From what I can see it was feature complete about 10 years ago.

Certainly seen nothing to tempt me to upgrade from Office XP, apart from Open Office.

I tried IE8 once - didn't seem to do anything that Chrome or Firefox does, so stopped bothering.

    Pointless then.
