    I used a thermal binding machine in the early 1990s which switched itself off after a certain amount of idle time. If you pressed the button after that time was up, it would display a message saying "Please switch me on".

    Eh? If it was so intelligent, why couldn't it switch itself on rather than displaying that message?

    I thought of doing something like that a while back, but I don't really do hardware. I got the idea from a mention of a box that switched itself off in The Soul of a New Machine, but I don't think that one actually had a robot arm, just a circuit that switched it off when it was powered up
