Sounds like that Danny deVito film where the neighbours try to outdo each other on the decorations front and have the ambition to have the lights seen from space.

One of the neighbours has a projector on their garage room that displays a varying Xmas scene (all tacky, of course) on their front wall.

It is even tackier than the other neighbour who has a laser on the lawn drawing flickering images on the front wall.
