    Reading Afgansitans history it seems to have been one of pretty much continual conflict of one sort or another since at least 300BC. From what I can see no-one has held onto the place in any meaning ful way for more than about 50 years at a time.

    Why on earth anyone thinks they can control the place now, given all the evidence of history, is beyond me.
