    Nail on head. A chav will demand respect, without ever earning it (or intending to earn it). They're aware they are most definitely not respected, so that's why it's a sore point with them. Apart from that, hoodies and/or baseball caps are a big giveaway.

    It really means: Council tenant, tracksuit, gold chains, illegitimate kids, no job, etc etc.

    For some odd reason some people use it as a term to describe anyone who is deemed to be below one’s own social standing.
