Costco for loo rolls, kitchen towel, washing powder, dog/cat food, Skippy extra chunk pnut butter, contact lens juice, croissants/cookies/those little Bakewell-type tarts and occasional one-off offers.
Not sure that we save that much, but it's good to have stockpiles of stuff.
Also, every now and then, there'll be jeans or trainers or t-shirts at a good price - and I've bought towels there before now. Oh, and those little 3-packs of reading glasses for £11.

I think you have to be really selective about what you buy at MAkro. Some things are really way more expensive than in asda but some things e.g tea, coffee meat are cheaper

Stock up on tea everyone - I heard on the news that the price is going to rocket soon... although I didn't hear why.

I too shop at Makro for bog rolls, washing powder, kitchen roll, washing up liquid, sauce and the like - in massive packs. Per roll/wash/portion it works out cheaper than the supermarkets, but you have to be very selective. Some of the workwear is good value too.
I also buy catering stuff for events which you can't buy in supermarkets - like bulk packs of plastic tumblers, hot cups etc. A lot of the small business people buy stuff there for vaguely personal use to get the VAT off (ie. put it through their company accounts), even though it's illegal. Needless to say I don't.

I shop there for bog rolls, kitchen roll, and washing powder. I have 4 kids.

Possibly. If it's for your consumption you do realise that claiming the VAT back is illegal...Originally posted by Monster Munch View PostDoes anyone here shop at Makro?
I can't see anything at my local store which isn't cheaper at Asda or Tesco. Even when you reclaim the VAT.
Am I missing something here?

I would have to say that I don't think cost co is all that great. The only things that i really see as worth buying from there are:
car tyres
Engine oil (much cheaper)
Croissants (best I have had in ages)
contact lens juice for the wife
sopoc (polish sliced meat)
magazines (EVO, etc)
washing powder
A lot of the stuff seems to be about the same price as the supermarket or offer price. They do have some things that you don't normally see though.
I remember going to Makro when I was a kid and a lot of things werent cheaper then or you would have to buy a massive box full; crisps and pork scrathings come to mind!

I stopped going to Makro about a decade ago as it was obvious that there was no price advantage over a bit of judicious shopping around.

I agree about Makro. I disagree about Costco, there is nothing in there that I cannot buy cheaper elsewhere, particularly electrical/electronic goods. I didn't renew this year. It is a PIA having to mentally add VAT to everything when browsing the store too.

Costco is lethal for buying huge supersize packets and bottles of stuff. Our house looks like a scene from the Borrowers at times.Originally posted by chicane View PostIt used to be really good about 15 years ago but you're right in saying that it's no better than Tesco or Asda nowadays. Try Costco if you want the real deal - you may have to pay for membership but you'll make the money back in no time.
They must spray some sort of impulse buy gas into those warehouses (box of 500 'Flying Saucers' anyone or 100kilo jar of Jellybellys. I also have enough razor blades to last well beyond my hundredth birthday.

Used to go there, but realized that the only things that I could save money on were the very things that I didn't want to buy like poorly fitting unbranded speedos, brands of beer with unappealing names, white wine simply labeled white wine etc...

I don't blindly buy humungous sizes of stuff just because it's a bit cheaper, because I don't have space for everything, and if I'm counting the cost then I factor in the storage cost, and that often changes the equation.
And I'm fussy about what I buy, especially in food. OK, Tabasco is Tabasco, but most "economy" chicken is not about to pass my lips.
And I won't shop at Asda because it's owned by oppressive religious lunatics.
Wot me grumpy???
