As Churchill (a fellow ex-soldier) will likely point out bimbling is something that certain parts of the Army do instead of marching; for example, the medics "By the left, quick ... bimble"

Poddling is kind of what Guinea piggies do, but It was originally a word i used to describe my daughter when she was a toddler and used to amble around in search of things to play with.
Bimbling is another good word, but It's more of an aimless wander where as poddling implies there is some purpose to what you're doing.
