    A Welsh man born in Denbigh. His parents were unmarried and his father aledgedly an alchoholic.

    At the age of 18 he made passage for the USA, jumping ship in New Orleans.
    He took part in the Civil war, becoming a serial deserter on both sides.

    Following the war he became a journalist and one of his first assignments was to lead a disasterous expedition to explore the Ottoman Empire.
