old client co asked me back for a year, strung me along while they said they were getting the contract sorted, only to decide they were going to make half the department redundant so getting a contractor in wasn't such a good idea.

in the meantime whilst waiting, i turned down another role that would have been 18 months

For as long as myself and Mrs PL have been together it has always been so.
Never been an issue for us.

It works out about the same after expenses and far less hassle.

problem is one of the interviews is next week, and the contract is £50 a day less than my normal rate and it means a year out in europe or somewhere else (monday to friday). And offers will be made straight after said interview.

The other contracts are all based in London, me normal manor for work, but clientco are dragging their respective feet over interview dates.

don't want to shoot meself in the foot over this....
IMO, if you have substantial "roots" in the UK then don't work abroad . You know what I mean, family etc.

£200 a day in UK is better than £500 abroad.
It works out about the same after expenses and far less hassle. Think of return flights and 4 day weeks - angst with loved ones on a Sunday.

Also, once you're abroad, you'll find it difficult to go for any UK local roles again.

Let the unattached young live the highlife abroad. If you don't consider you're like that, why try to pretend you'd be happy doing it?

All my work tends to be in the South East. There isn't much reason for the companies to be there other than an excuse for visiting big wigs to have a jolly in London

I've only had 1 night away in 5 years of contracting and that was a xmas do! I guess support roles are more generic than coding making it easier to find work close to home.

I started contracting as a short term measure, that was back in 2001. Even when I lived in the South East they always tended to be too far to commute daily. Now I'm in the North West they are allmost certainly so. But then I offset that with having a couple of months off per year.

i wouldn't exactly say i'm willing but i aint been earning nuffink for the last 6 months (though i do have a rainy years fund).

other half doesn't mind as long as he sees me at the weekend

the cats don't mind as long as they get fed by someone... anyone

I would take the first job that I wanted - if the Europe one is the first one, then I would take it.

As already said - a bird in the hand and all that.

Only thing is i have to go to Ireland for a family funeral next week which knocks out most of Monday and Tuesday (flying back wednesday morning).

I suppose me other half will just have to deal with no one being around for the next year
Me cats will probably miss me more
