OK, sorry I was unclear. I mean that what I owe on the current house is almost as much as I bought it for; i.e. the house-buying has just started, rather than being done or almost done (as would be the case for the house I was buying before I got divorced).

Rameses II died aged 96 and had over 100 childrenOriginally posted by TimberWolf View PostLife expectancy rises as you get older. So, if you want to live long, get old.
As an aside, Egyptian Pharaohs only had a life expectancy in the mid 40s (and their plebs 10 years less than that). Doubt it was poor diet that killed them.

Judging from my father and grandfather I only have three years left although I am hoping the 40+ a day fags had something to do with the first and the knife in the gut something to do with the second.

If I live aslong as my Grandad I'll make it to 2061. I think I'm happy about that

Ha! Good luck to you, my mileage certainly varies.Originally posted by Solidec View PostDon't spend beyond your means during your working life, dont have too many kids, 2 is enough to replace you and your partners DNA when you die!
In todays money, if I was mortgage free, I could easily live on a retired income of about £1000 a month between me and the mrs. A combined pension (be it an annuity, savings interest or whatever) of less than £12K a year is not that hard to amass imo. Hell even one good fully paid off investment property + basic state pension would hit that mark without much trouble.
No mortgage, no kids to support, just quietly enjoying life somewhere tranquil and idyllic. The Simple life.
I am not mortgage free, far less with also having a paid-off investment property.
I have not left my DNA anywhere, but am still involved in the raising of a young person, as I was with my wife's children: my partner's daughter is at Uni, and would get a grant (based on her mother's low income) were it not for my income coming into the household, so I do feel I have to replace that with a contribution from me. Yes I could tell her to eff off, or pretend to the govt that we are not living together. I don't like either of those.
So my outgoings can't be reduced that much, not yet anyway.
Edit: yes, that is what happens if you get divorced: your plans go back 20 years, but your body clock doesn't.Last edited by expat; 6 January 2009, 16:56.

I think there is a term for this called 'midlife crisis'. It recently happened to both my parents... but yeah, nobody is getting younger and can you really go and do all the things you want to do after retirement (perhaps old age may stop you)?.. Living a happy life != money in my opinion.Originally posted by expat View PostNo I didn't mean that
I meant, sod the work, let me take to the hills/cycle to work/ see the world/etc before I die. Because I will, sooner than I probably think.
