The Bible may have done, but the (so called) Christian Western world has long since stopped following the teachings of Christianity.

The secular culture, yes. The established/state churches in the UK, yes. The churches in the USA which seem more focused on hate than love, yes.

You could say the same of Islam. It's all about interpretation - the nutty Christians on our side interpret things slightly differently to the rest of us, but still claim to be Christians etc ...

We will have to agree to differ there. I can see how even Islamic fundamentalists believe that they are following Islam (they may be the only true followers). I can not see how the majority of claimed Christians are following the teachings of Christ.
