It's liek I said elsewhere, people always villify the thing they aren't getting from their job. Permies pretend money doeesn't matter to them, and contractors pretend influence over work strategy and organisational status doesn't matter to them.

I've slightly edited it for content...Originally posted by lambrini_socialist View Postmy favourite hilarious comment on that thread:
Having been a 'permie' for 22 years and never had the bottle to go contracting and earn shedloads more money for a lot less work I find this story rather heartwarming. In my experience the majority of contractors (note I say majority and not all) are far more capable than their permanent compatriots and take far less time off pretending to do flexi-days or filling in endless paperwork in a pitiful attempt to get an above inflation pay rise. This is probably from years of working in 'get the job done, never mind the permies, now let's go!' environments.
Probably going to get the back up of a lot of people who've been getting money for old rope for donkey's years, but being a public sector permie, I couldn't criticise my colleagues too badly.
Mine's the one with the slim wallet in the left pocket and a big wad of bitterness that I couldn't cut it in the right.

Having been a 'permie' for 22 years and resisted the urge to go contracting and earn shedloads more money for a lot less work I find this story rather heartwarming. In my experience the majority of contractors (note I say majority and not all) are far less skilled than their permenant compatriots and take far less responsibility for things. This is probably from years of working in 'get the job done, never mind the quality, now let's go!' environments.
Probably going to get the back up of a lot of people who've been getting money for old rope for donkey's years, but I'm sure they all have nice fat piles of cash they've been accumulating for years to soothe their sorry brows.
Mine's the one with the slim wallet in the left pocket but a big wad of highly valued integrity in the right.

Just a mini-doom then. In 2002 they cut rates 20% and had a policy of clearing out as many contractors as possible.

A few of the 'tractors at Barcap have gone permie. I'm also having a few months off ...Originally posted by Crossroads View PostI've turned down a 6 month extension at a 10% cut (at Barclays).
F**k 'em, I'd rather take a 100% cut and do no work, summer isn't over yet.

But the danger is that you lose better staff and keep those prepared to do ten per cent less work.

I think all of us non-city contractors would be quite happy with 10% less than the city-boys get. Boomed!
