Just remembered a nice Weissbier I drank in Salzburg, Austria:

    Wieselburger Beer

The Weihenstephan Heffe Weissbier I'm supping right now is rather nice (brewed and bottled in Weihenstephan).

It depends - if it's brewed in Germany it will be fine, because of the German beer purity laws. If it's "Brewed under licence in the UK" then it could be any old muck

Given that this discussion seems to have strayed somewhat from discussion of true Weissbier...

Virtually any so-called "German" beer you find in the UK has been made in a converted abattoir in Warrington, using the leavings of a chemical plant in Runcorn, but with a licence to use the German branding. It has as much in common with German beer as my left foot has with Cleopatra.

Franziskaner (saw the old monk's castle a few years ago) is good, Edelweise ok.

Don't put all the uncooked rice grains in the beer if offered with the lemon - makes the Tambora eruption look like child's play...

I'll third the Erdinger proposal. Our local English pub has it on tap - which is much better than bottled.

Having said that, the bottled Erdinger alcohol free is quite a palatable drink in its own right.

I used to live just round the corner from the Erdinger brewery and although I don't like Weißen beer that was practically all you could get in town. Interestingly enough, it tasted a lot better better there than anywhere else, nearly palatable. Currently live just down the road from the Darmstädter brewery but much prefer Pfungstadter...

4% is perfectly acceptable for a pleasant evening drinking sesh. If you drink 12+ pints you won't be sober (enough to drive).

Where I work, opinions are split about Hoergarden, the most popular one (found almost everywhere in the City these days):
Half love it - unusual, strong, nice taste
Other half hate it - tastes like fairy liquid

PS It's Belgian, not German though

Any recommend any other brands apart from

    Paulaner
    Franziskaner
    Schneider Weisse
    Schöfferhofer
    (Edelweiss is Austrian)

P.S. Why does weissbier get one hammered very quickly as compared to other beers?
Erdinger. It's OK, but I'm more of a cider man, myself.

Dunkele Weißen oder Hefe Weißen? Tastes like bananas and I know people here who drink it mixed with banana juice. Personally I'll stick with Ebbelwoi or Pils.
