It's a totally stupid attitude. At best, short term thinking. Since the earth is already doomed by such events as asteroid hit, super volcanoes, gamma ray bursts, nearby supernovae, the sun becoming a red giant etc., it seems to me the only hope the planet's life has is for humans to develop the technology to seed other planets, and defences against these natural disasters.
