    It's a little more complicated than that. There are many Iranians, the more educated, who consider themselves Persians, descendants of the Great Persian Empire of Darius. To them the Islamicists are hicks from the sticks. After the revolution in 1979 and during the eighties, these people kept their head down (or were forced down), but as the country gets younger demographically these impulses are increasing.

    I saw something on News 24 about how Iranian women were being more daring with their dress by having some of their hair showing and how a few had abandoned the head scarf altogether, yet in this country the full on burka is becoming more commonplace.

    It seems whilst Muslim women in Iran are trying to gain some sort of equality and respect as equals to men by standing up to traditionalists the opposite is happening in this country, I would go as far to say some are being deliberately controversial.

    I may be generalising here but I do find it quite ironic that the Iranian cultural attaché's wife was (I can only presume) a 'moderate muslim' judging by her dress, must be quite shocking to come over here and see what modern western culture has done to some of ours.
