    I heard a story from someone who had got all the way to job offer without being told this.

    They even expected him to accept without that information, until he made it clear that he wasn't going to do so without knowing the name of the company.

    Just forward one of his mails to his works address and cc someone else there. That should be good for a laugh. Conversely you could always think 'WTF, he's found me some paying work, shall I just take it?'

    Sounds like he's trying to set up on his own and is poaching his current employers clients, probably without telling either of them, or you.
