    resting is 52-58 depending on how rested.....peak is 195 but I can only keep that peak going for 2-3 minutes, dropping back down quickly.

    But then I go to the gym most days, and have been checking my HRT each day.

    This makes sense, children's heart rates are higher until fully developed.

    A friend at the time could swim a 4x50 medley and his would be back down to 55 within a minute of finishing. (He wasn't even a top swimmer, though he was better than me.)
    I think recovery is in fact a better measure of fitness than absolute resting heart rate. There a step test you can do, something along the lines of:

    1 - measure heart rate
    2 - step up and down a box\step 12" for 3 minutes
    3 - rest for 1.5 minutes
    4 - measure heart rate

    Subtract 4 from 1, the lower the number the better.

    When I was 16 (and did several hours a week of rugby or swimming training) it was 85.

    There's probably genetics involved in what a person's lowest heart could ever be. But if you were to take an unfit person and measure their resting heart rate before and after a training program it will most likely come down as they get fitter. Mine's is 46 woohoo.
