*Igor Kaplinsky(Uzk) vs Roman Karamazov(Azn) in the 1978 world championships. A needle match between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan who were going through a period of hostility at the time. Kaplinsky won with a controversial reverse Smyth manouver which was then overruled by the umpires and the match was awarded to Karamazov. Uzbekistan withdrew from the competition in protest and the diplomatic fall out affected international relations for years afterwards.
